Dads are great, but when it comes to picking the perfect father’s day gift, that can be a struggle.
It’s last-minute, and instead of simply buying another shirt, tie or coffee mug for your pop, treat him to a few Chicago-style ideas that can be done easily with little planning.
Here are just a few day-of ways to show dad you love him – and let him see a bit of the Windy City.
Take a cruise: Sail on over to Navy Pier, take a spin on the new Centennial Wheel and board a brunch or dinner cruise on the Spirit of Chicago or the Odyssey! Tickets are still available. Set sail for Father’s Day aboard the Spirit of Chicago. Its brunch buffet will let Dad feast on omelets, BBQ sirloin and roasted chicken. The dinner cruise comes with sunset views of the Windy City. Onboard the Odyssey brunch cruise, Dad gets a complimentary cocktail and carved-to-order black pepper crusted sirloin. On the dinner cruise, dads get a free complimentary 12 oz. rib eye steak.
Play a round: If your dad is like most dads, he probably enjoys a good round of golf. Even in the city, it’s possible to get some time on the greens. The Chicago Park District operates eight golf courses and driving ranges across the Windy City that offer glimpses of Lake Michigan from the greens. From Lakeview and Lincoln Park to the South Shore, you’re bound to find a course close to you. Tee times can even be booked online here.
Roll down the river: If you’ve not been to the city’s revamped Riverwalk lately, now’s the perfect time to visit – and to treat dad to a waterfront meal. Now open for the season, the Riverwalk comes with tiki bars such as Island Party Hut and eateries such as City Winery. After lunch, you can even work off your meal by taking pop on a leisurely stroll along the Chicago River, or give your upper body a workout with a kayak rental.
Go fish: Is your dad the quiet, outdoorsy type? Spend the day bonding and casting lines at one of the Chicago Park District’s 11 fishing areas. The park district boasts lagoons, ponds, portions of the Chicago River, 22 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan, and eight harbors for fishing. From Brown Trout, Yellow Perch, Rock Bass, Bluegill and Carp, you and dad can catch up while making a few catches.
Peruse brews: Many dads love beer, and luckily, the Windy City has no shortage of local breweries to tour – many complete with taps for tasting. From well-known names such as Goose Island to West Loop staples such as Haymarket to the Logan Square’s Revolution Brewing to the Lagunitas in Pilsen, there’s sure to be a brewery near you to please dad’s palate. Here’s just a sample of some of the options.
