Avondale is Chicago’s nexus of the weird, the sacred, and the darkly whimsical. Where else can you find metal on vinyl, pinned taxidermy, rare grimoires, and horror-obsessed espresso within a few walkable blocks? So forget Spirit Halloween, and take a trip through Chicago’s year-round, delightfully spooky neighborhood.

A note from our CEO

Welcome to chicago.com

We built this place for the Chicago region we believe in: one where people know their neighbors, communities have healthy conversations, and public spaces truly serve the public.

Too often, digital spaces are built by for-profit tech companies that place their business models ahead of the community. As nonprofit public media, we’re putting the community first. We want to build a platform for everyone in the Chicago area and we want to build it with you.

We’re a work in progress, starting small and building as we go. What you see today will look different a year from now. So take a look around. Make a guide. Discover a new local spot. Connect with your neighbors. And tell us how to make this space more useful to you and to our city.

We’re so happy you’re here.

Melissa Bell
